When starting or thinking about any patio project there are 4 things you must consider. If you do so you are almost guaranteed that your project will be a success. And if you don’t it could turn out to be an eyesore. Your patio is almost always going to be viewed in conjunction with your house and therefore all 4 of these questions have to do with your home.
How Far Away Is Your House From Your Project?
This is probably the most important question you can ask. If your project is very close or adjacent to your house the next 4 questions are going to be extremely important as if they are not considered; the end result can really make your outdoor space very unappealing to the eye.
If your project is further away from the house these questions are still important but you have more options to work with as the look of your home will not impact your project as much. Also if your project is further away from the house you can use natural or man-made screens or barriers like hedges, walls, or flower gardens to keep it out of view if you choose a material or style which is unique and unlike that of your home.
What’s The Architectural Style Of Your House?
The style of your home is a very important consideration when planning any type of patio project. Matching the style of your home is always the easiest way to guarantee your project works with the overall look of your space.
That being said the opposite is also true, mismatching your style is an easy way to take away from the beauty of your patio, garden, home, or all three. So for example a patio with clean lines and a uniform look would obviously look best when installed next to a modern style home.
What Material(s) Is Your House Made From?
The material your house is made from is also a very important element to consider as well as this will influence the materials you choose for your project. For projects close to the home it would be a smart idea to use either the same material or similar-looking material to ensure harmony.
It’s also important not to forget that each material has its own different texture as well. A similar material and texture can go a very long way in making your outdoor space look visually appealing and cohesive as a whole.
For example, a patio or pathway made from brick pavers would be a great way to compliment a brick home. Or perhaps using a semi-rough stone such as flagstone would be a smart idea if your house was made from a material like stucco.
What’s The Color(s) Of Your House?
The element which can really tie everything together is color. Choosing a material that not only goes with the style of your home, but matches or blends with its material, texture, and color is a slam dunk. Not all materials are available in all colors, so the color of your home will definitely play an important part in the material you end up choosing for your patio project as well.
And while it is true that sometimes contrasting colors can work very well, this must be planned carefully making it much easier to go with similar colors. The effect of color as a unifying element cannot be overstated. So go with something that matches for maximum cohesion.
Answering these 4 questions can help you to make your next project a success the first time around. So always keep in mind: how far your project is from your home, what the style of your home is what material it’s made from, and that material’s texture, as well as the color of your house.
And remember if your project is far enough away and does not work with any of these elements you can always use a barrier to help keep the two areas visually apart and both looking great!
