Your yard is not only about beauty but also about function. The different types of areas you choose to add to your outdoor space will decide what you can or can’t use it for. Here are six that always work to ensure you, your family, and guests get the most from it.

An Area To Grow

While plants and flowers can be added anywhere in your outdoor space, having a specific area to use as a garden is a truly rewarding experience. Planting flowers will add to the beauty of your yard and many times a sweet fragrance as well.

And of course, don’t forget a splash of color. Fruits and vegetables are a fun choice that always taste better when grown yourself and also provide an invaluable lesson for young children on life and where food comes from.

Many homeowners, especially if they have a green thumb or just love to work in the garden will add multiple areas to grow, which adds to both the beauty and function of your space tremendously.

Somewhere To Workout And Play

Having somewhere to workout or get some exercise is a huge benefit and one which can greatly enhance your health and well-being. Plus, it also means you won’t have to leave your house to do so.

Swimming pools, basketball courts or hoops, or even just a wide space to run around with a pet or child are all excellent ideas and great ways to burn some calories.

Don’t forget somewhere for swing sets, playhouses, and climbing structures for young kids who need their own place to play with friends. Games like shuffleboard or horseshoes can also be incorporated into a zone for play for someone looking for a relaxed way to have some fun.

A Place To Keep Cool

Whether you are exercising or not, you should have a place to keep cool. A shady spot out of the sun’s direct rays is always a must for any yard. Planting large growing deciduous trees are an easy way to help keep the temperature down in the hot summer months and when the leaves come off in the fall and winter it will allow the sun to warm up your house too.

Big trees also improve air quality and protect against strong winds. Just remember to plant them far enough away from the house so that in the unlikely case of it being struck by lightning or some other force of nature it won’t cause any damage. Patio enclosures and shade sails are always good ideas if you need shade closer to your house or don’t have the space for trees.

A Space To Entertain

Every home should have a space to entertain outdoors. Patios and decks are natural places to set up garden furniture for outdoor relaxing, conversing, and eating with friends. Of course, outdoor kitchens, gazebos, and pergolas can make them even more enjoyable and convenient.

If you are going to be having guests make sure that the area you are entertaining or eating in has some shade from the sun. You can also create private nooks and multiple areas for guests to spread out and enjoy your yard while getting away from the crowd.

A Spot To Attract Wildlife

Attracting wildlife into your yard can be great fun and yet another great way to teach kids about nature. Of course, we mean the right kind of wildlife not raccoons, skunks, or other pests. Having a special place with flowers which attract butterflies and maybe a birdbath or a water feature are easy ways to do so no matter if you live in the city or the country.

A bird feeder is also a splendid way to accomplish this and with a simple bird guide in hand, it is easy to become a backyard birdwatcher, just be careful of pesky squirrels who are professionals at stealing bird food. The diversity of birds you’ll see is actually pretty amazing no matter where you are located.

Your Very Own Nook To Relax

Probably the most important of all areas you need to have is a nook or space to relax. Whether that means taking a nap, reading a book, drinking your morning coffee, or just sitting and enjoying the sights, sounds, and smells your outdoor space has to offer you need somewhere to do it.

This could be a completely separate area that is more private and secluded or it could be the same area on your deck or patio you use for entertaining. Having a view of the spot you use to attract wildlife is often a great way to go too. Just be sure to have a comfy place to sit, recline, or lie down that doesn’t get too hot. From teak to rattan garden furniture there is a lot to choose from in all shapes and sizes.

While adding all six areas to your yard will guarantee the maximum amount of use and enjoyment you may already have some of these or might not need them. Choosing the ones that work for you and your space is always the best way to go.
