Many of us have wished that we could step back in time to an era when giant reptiles roamed the earth. And with the help of a dinosaur statue, you can! You can create your very own Jurassic Park, and without having to worry about being eaten or spending billions of dollars. So here’s your complete guide to dinosaur statues.
Dinosaur Statue Species
Luckily for dinosaur fans, statues come in a range of species and in a variety of poses. You’ll typically be able to find all your favorites such as the Velociraptor, Spinosaurus, Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Brontosaurus, Allosaurus, and of course the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Some statue manufacturers even offer flying dinosaurs such as Pteranodon or Pterodactyl statues. These may be featured on the ground or have their wings spread so that they can be hung from wire to make them seem as if they are flying overhead.
Material Choices
While artistic statues are sometimes made from wood or metal (such as aluminum or bronze) today most dinosaur statues are made from resin. That’s because resin statues are durable, weatherproof and at the same time a lot lighter in weight than other materials which makes them easier to move.
Statues made from resin are considered to be the most realistic in appearance and are generally hand-painted with incredibly lifelike and detailed markings, colors, and even textures.
Another material option is concrete. While a concrete dinosaur statue will normally cost less than other choices it will lack the detail of resin and weigh a lot more. That being said concrete options can sometimes be climbed and sat on without having to worry about damage.
Popular Statue Options:
Life-Size Statues
A life-size dinosaur statue is definitely not for everyone. They usually cost several thousand dollars, weigh several hundred pounds, and are absolutely enormous. But these are also some of the exact reasons that make them so special and rare.
Let’s be serious a life-size Velicoraptor statue or any other giant dino for that matter is a far cry from one of your grandma’s garden gnomes. It’s basically the closest thing to owning a real dinosaur. And some of the toothier species are sure to give unsuspecting guests and even potential thieves a scare.
Typically life-size dinosaur statues are purchased by serious dino collectors. But also by various types of businesses such as restaurants, mini-golf courses, and museums, just to name a few. By adding one of these giants to your property or business you can expect to attract a lot of attention, picture-takers, and even stop traffic.
Most realistic-looking life-size dino statues are made out of resin. While resin is lighter than other materials because of their extreme size these statues can be quite heavy. So unlike smaller statues, many owners do leave them outdoors year-round. When doing so it’s typically recommended to simply cover them up during the winter months and give them a coating with a polyurethane spray yearly or as needed to keep them protected from the UV rays and looking like new.
Scaled Statues
Scaled statues come in all sizes from small all the way up to giant life-size dinosaurs. While some of them do coincidentally also have scales on their skin, a “scaled statue,” means that it is actually made to scale.
In other words, it has all the same proportions as the specific species of dinosaur that it is made to represent. So a small or medium dinosaur garden statue that is scaled will look just as convincing, for its size, as a much larger statue. And that can be very important for collectors who want something that’s as realistic as possible.
Dinosaur Head Statues
For indoor walls or outdoor walls that are protected from the weather, a dinosaur head statue can be a fun choice. These are often displayed just like a hunting trophy. And when owning one you’ll of course need to invent a suspenseful story about how you bagged your giant scaly beast.
They can also be used as a piece of wall art (that you most likely will want to name) for entertainment rooms, man caves, and kid’s bedrooms. And don’t forget it as a party prop for dinosaur-themed birthday parties.
Hatching Dinosaur Egg Statues
For those looking to add some baby dinos to their collection, dinosaur egg statues are always an adorable choice. These little guys come in various poses and stages of hatching.
They are often used outdoors to create smaller-sized focal points or are placed close to adult dinosaur statues to make it seem as if they are being looked after by their mom or dad. Several dinosaur egg statues can also be used together to create a nest full of hatching eggs.
Because these statues are cute, and not as large (or expensive) as other options they make ideal gifts for dinosaur lovers. And they can easily be placed indoors on a tabletop, desk, or bookshelf.
Dinosaur Skeleton Statues
One of the most unique statue options are those which are made to look like dinosaur skeletons. Some dinosaur skeleton statues look just the skeletons you’d see in a museum and stand upright. Another option are statues that are designed with a flat back and are made to be placed on the ground.
That way they make it appear as if there has been a fossil discovery right in your very own backyard (although some collectors do choose to mount these on the wall). To add to this effect you may want to partially bury the skeleton.
And for maximum impact you can place it in an area where your guests stumble onto it by themselves, such as near a walkway, to give them a bit of a shock or thrill. Needless to say, both types of skeleton statues can also work well as spooky Halloween décor too.
Dinosaur Bone Statues
Instead of a complete skeleton, there are also statues that look like fossilized bones. These typically consist of a single dino bone that is enormous in size. And because they are so huge they make a big impression. Dino bone statues can work as a fun addition to a children’s play area, a gigantic conversation piece, or as a joke when placed near your pet’s dog house.
Gnome-Eating Dinosaurs
When it comes to garden gnomes, most people seem to love them or hate them. However as funny as it is, one type of statue that both groups seem to love is a gnome-eating dinosaur statue.
Just like the garden gnomes, they are gobbling down, these dinos are often painted in vivid colors. And while some are made to look like specific species such as T-Rex, or movie monsters such as Godzilla, others are simply cartoon-style dinosaurs.
Whether you use your dinosaur gnome statue to keep your current gnome collection in line, or as a form of pest control to gnome-proof your garden, it’s guaranteed to make people laugh and add a bit of humor and color to your property.
