Are There Crows In Australia?

Crows are remarkably smart birds that also happen to be extremely adaptable. They navigate unfamiliar circumstances via observation and interaction. Crows reside in locations all over the globe. While they do not live in certain parts of South America, they do reside in the Land Down Under. Are there crows in Australia? Yes, there are.

About Crows

Crows are the family Corvidae alongside jays, magpies, and ravens. Ravens and crows in Australia encompass a number of different species. Crows are close to being full omnivores. That’s due to the fact that they consume a broad array of food items.

Some examples of the foods these animals eat are other birds, bird eggs, tiny mammals, reptiles, amphibians, crustaceans, insects, mollusks, grains, nuts, and fruits. They tend to hoard food for later consumption as well.

Types of Crows in Australia

Australia has a total of five native crow species. These species are the Torresian crow, the little crow, the forest raven, the little raven, and, last but certainly not least, the Australian raven.

Torresian Crows

Torresian crows are one of the most common crow species. Queensland residents tend to spot these birds with great frequency. These crows often reside in suburban locales, too.

Little Crows

Little crows are a lot like the previously mentioned Torresian crows physically. Despite the similarities between the two species, little crows are equipped with bills that are just a tad smaller. Bluish rings surround their pupils.

Forest Ravens

Forest ravens or “Tasmanian ravens” come from southern sections of Victoria and Tasmania. Although they hail from Victoria and Tasmania, people sometimes see them in New South Wales regions like both Armidale and Dorrigo.

Little Ravens

Little ravens come from southeastern regions of Australia. Their legs, beaks, and feathers are fully black. These birds are frequently seen in pastures, grasslands, and habitats that are open.

Australian Ravens

Australian ravens have entirely black mouths, beaks, and feathers. Their sturdy feet and legs are blackish-gray in coloration. Pale rings surround their eyes.

Living With Crows in Australia

Crows are often classified as pests or vermin in Australia. They eat lots of grains and fruits on farmlands. They have penchants for fruits that are especially soft. They also feast on potatoes and nuts. How exactly are these creatures such farm menaces? Crows fixate on the plentiful food options that are accessible to them on farms.

They extract fruit straight from trees. Since the birds spend a lot of time on trellises, they often force them to fall to the ground. These birds sometimes go after lambs that have been neglected by their mothers. They sometimes go after ill lambs that are on the verge of death as well. People sometimes frown upon the sight of crows in their yards.

If you’re frustrated by the presence of crows for any reason, there are certain techniques that may be able to help you drive them away successfully. Make a point to put sturdy lids on top of all of your garbage cans. If a crow notices a garbage can that’s basically brimming with the remnants of food, he or she quite understandably won’t be able to turn away from it. Crows don’t just remove the things that they can eat.

Since they rummage trash cans thoroughly, they make massive messes in general. If you want to steer clear of this unpleasant scenario, you need to make sure that your garbage can lids are always secure. You may be able to deter crows by placing dead crow decoys in your yard, or by using fake predators such as owls or hawks.

While crows in Australia are often looked at as pests these birds play an important role in the environment. Since they consume animal carcasses, they help to prevent the spread of disease and pathogens. Crows also eat large numbers of insects and help to distribute seeds.
