Birds That Look Like Ostriches

Ostriches are flightless birds with bare necks and heads. They are well-known for their ability to run at high speeds but also because they’re the largest species in the world. However, they are often confused with several other types of birds that have a similar appearance. So here’s a list of birds that look like ostriches to help you tell them apart.

Rhea

The rhea is a big flightless bird from South America. There are two distinct species of rhea: the greater rhea and the lesser rhea, along with several sub-species. This ostrich-looking bird is also referred to as the “nandu,” and unlike the ostrich which has two toes, the rhea has three.

Emu

The emu is an Australian bird that looks like an ostrich. In fact, the emu is the largest bird on the Australian continent. While it’s not as big as the ostrich it can reach an impressive height of 75 inches (190 cm.). Unlike the ostrich, the emu lays dark green eggs.

Cassowary

Cassowaries are birds that look like ostriches, but only at first glance. While they are big and flightless, unlike the ostrich they have a unique skin-covered casque, also called a “helmet,” on their head that gets bigger as they age. While adult cassowaries are typically black in color, their facial skin is brightly colored. They are found in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and Australia.
