Most of us design our outdoor spaces because we want a perfect spot for relaxing and entertaining guests. But, how can you truly unwind if you don’t have enough privacy.
Your deck, backyard, or courtyard is an extension of your home. If you don’t like the idea of neighbors or passers-by to be able to see in, you’ll want to do something to improve your privacy. Here are the top low-cost solutions:
Install Lattice
Using timber framed lattice is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to screen other people’s view of your home. If you have the tools and some basic carpentry skills, you can DIY this project in a weekend.
Think about the actual use of the lattice panels before purchasing it. If you’re going to use it as a fence, you will need heavy-duty panels. These will require external support posts. A stable and strong structure like this can support climbing plants. The plants enhance the privacy too.
If you’re installing lattice only for additional privacy, choose the lightweight models. These don’t need external support and are usually installed above existing fences.
Timber Battens
While they can be more costly than lattice, timber battens can be an elegant addition to your space. Use vertical battens if you want to add a gorgeous and sophisticated height to your outdoor space.
Go for horizontal battens if you want your backyard to appear bigger and wider. If you plan to enclose your patio, deck, gazebo, or pergola have the battens made out of the same type of wood. Or you may be able to stain them to match your space.
Heighten Your Walls Or Fences
Sometimes, all you need to do is add a little height to your existing wall or fence. In the garden below, the homeowner used wooden grids to make the fences taller. It added much more privacy in the pool area.
Laser-Cut Screens
If you want an effortless and decorative screen, laser-cut panels might be right for you. You can purchase these off-the-shelf or have them custom made.
Personalizing the panels makes this option more expensive so we suggest looking for ready-made designs and sizes that will work for your space.
Hedges
Using plants to enclose your outdoor space can make it seem like you own your own secret garden. Yes, they will require regular trimming but hedges can help you feel relaxed and refreshed along with providing a natural look.
Be a responsible neighbor if you take this route. You may want to make an agreement with your neighbors regarding the maximum size and height of the plants before you choose to grow or add hedges.
Trees That Fall In Line
Trees offer the same natural benefits of hedges but they take time to grow. So you’ll need a lot of patience if you’re planning to have them eventually block your neighbor’s view of your house.
If you can’t wait that long, consider fast-growing species of tall and leafy plants. Bamboo is one option worth considering when you want a fast grower. Although it will need to be maintained regularly to make sure it doesn’t get out of control and even get into your neighbor’s garden as it can be invasive.
Breeze Blocks
This traditional building material can bring that coastal, summer vibe into your garden. It provides privacy without compromising natural ventilation and the connection to nature. Blocks are inexpensive and easy to install too.
Enhancing the privacy of your outdoor area without sacrificing style can take some thinking but the results are worth it. You’ll have your own personal retreat that you can enjoy alone or with your family and friends. So how do you want to enclose your space?
