The nights are longer, temperatures lower and winter will be here before we know it. But, there’s still plenty of time this season to get out there to protect that patio from winter’s wrath. And although we typically only think about our decks in warmer months when we relax on them having cookouts or basking in the warm sun, it’s important to remember them when it starts to get chilly so that protect them from any costly damage the elements may bring.

End of Season Clean Up

A build-up of dirt and stains from the barbecues over the summer can take away from the beauty of your deck’s wood. Therefore, it’s important to restore your deck’s appearance with a bleach-free cleaner after clearing your surface with a broom or leaf blower.

This is also the time where you want to check that there is no rot, loose rails, or popped up nails in your wood. Also, ensure that the gaps in the deck are clean (and not filled) so that rainwater, ice, and snow can melt through.

(Pro tip: Don’t get out the power washer. High-pressure water can destroy the wood. A regular hose and a soft brush are all you need to clean before adding a deck cleaner.) Follow that up by adding a protective coating. If, however, your deck appears to be really greyed from the sun, you should consider stripping the faded paint before applying a water-repellent stain.

Add a “Finishing” Touch

After you have cleaned and/or stripped your deck’s surface, you want to add the water-repellent finish. The protective coating will shield the wood from winter’s harsh elements. Some higher quality deck finish can last years and come in both clear or colored formulas depending on your particular needs.

Cover or Move Furniture & Planters

If you live in a state where snow doesn’t fall, you can simply cover the furniture in the winter with little issues. If you live in a colder climate where snow does fall, try to move all your planters and other furniture to below the deck or in your garage if you have room.

(Pro tip: When snow falls on your wooden deck, avoid using shovels to remove it. Shoveling decks can destroy the wood. Instead, try using a broom to move the snow.)

Fire it Up

Now that your deck is all ready to go for wintertime, still make sure that you’re able to enjoy it despite the low temperatures. You can purchase outdoor heaters and portable fire pits for your deck that can allow you to continue time in the fresh air without freezing to death. Totally worth the investment.

Now that you know how to prepare your deck for winter, you can be sure that your outdoor patio is primed and ready to enjoy when spring rolls around.
