No one wants their patio to look like a barren wasteland especially if it’s somewhere they spend a lot of time. While natural stone, outdoor tiles, and brickwork can all be very attractive, to make them truly complete all patios need some surrounding trees. Luckily you don’t have to be a landscaping professional to make your patio look like it was designed by one.
Adding trees around the edges of your patio area can really help to make it feel much more personal and private. However, there are a few things you need to keep in mind when considering what trees to purchase.
First off, you don’t want to choose anything that will grow too large or tall and eventually dominate your space and make it look unbalanced. Options that are fairly small are usually much better.
Also, be sure the trees you want are not ones known to have invasive and potentially damaging root structures. Many are capable of cracking concrete, as with some types of bamboo for example. Before purchasing, you’ll also want to consider how much you want to clean up after your trees if at all.
Each specific type of tree is different in what it drops, how much, and when. Leaves, seedpods, flowers, fruit, and even bark may be something that will require a good sweeping. You’ll also want to decide on whether you want evergreen or deciduous trees.
While evergreens usually drop needles and leaf litter year-round, deciduous trees may do so only in the fall. Depending on your preferences and privacy needs evergreens like cypress trees might be more your style as they generally function very well as privacy screens all year because they do not lose their leaves.
Deciduous trees, on the other hand, can provide you with striking colors in the autumn months and in the winter when you are not using your patio as much, let the sunlight shine through brightening your space and even home since they have no remaining leaves.
One of the most popular deciduous options are always the smaller-sized maples of which there are countless varieties. And of course, don’t forget to look for something that appeals to you personally. You may have always wanted your very own fruit tree or multiple ones and this could be your chance.
If you already have a kitchen garden they could also serve as an extension of it by giving you healthy homegrown while contributing to the look of your patio at the same time. Admirers of specific flowers can use this as an opportunity as well if that flower happens to grow on a tree that will work well in their space.
Don’t overlook fragrance either; there are many choices that can transform your outdoor area into a sweet-smelling paradise such as dogwood trees. Thinking about the feel you want to create can also really help, for example, if you desire something more tropical there are plenty of smaller trees in the palm family that can help you accomplish this.
If you’re really stuck just close your eyes and imagine what you’d like to be surrounded by or what view you’d want when you’re sipping your morning coffee while sitting at your bistro set or lounging in your favorite chair in the shade of your patio gazebo.
Planting trees will always enhance the look and experience you have when using your patio space. So be sure to take the tips mentioned above and use them to help you choose the right ones.
