One of the most overlooked parts of any garden or patio project are the transition spaces. These are the areas that bring you from one feature or destination to another. Whether it is from the front to the back, or pool to the house, they can be a phenomenal way to add to the attractiveness of your outdoor space.

Don’t Forget Your Side Yard

While many homeowners concentrate most of their efforts on the front and back of their properties, they tend to leave out their side yard. They are often left to keep trash bins, bicycles, and yard equipment. This is often a shame because they really can add a lot of value and charm to your home.

You should consider it as a project particularly if you have windows on the side of your house or if it can be used to go from the front to the back. There are a few simple ideas to help you get the most from them. By planting evergreens in front of your windows you will be guaranteed a natural and good-looking view no matter what the season.

If your home is very close to the neighboring property, also planting tall-growing shrubs near to your property line is a smart idea too that will help serve as a privacy screen allowing you to keep your shades up as opposed to down. They can also help to block out unsightly fences.

There are many outdoor storage options you can use to keep your garbage cans and equipment in, that will also match the exterior of your house and keep unwanted pests out at the same time. Water features can also be included to help block out unwanted street noise.

Pathways Can Be An Experience

Paths are a fun way to bring you and your guests to their destination, despite how close or far. Not only will they save your lawn from being walked all over by providing a designated place to travel but can also serve as a pleasant experience for anyone who strolls down them.

If you will be going back and forth over an area quite often, they can actually be a necessity as they provide grip. People with outdoor kitchens, pools, pergolas, gazebos, and ponds should consider one. A stepping stone path is a simple and inexpensive DIY project that anyone can accomplish with no skill required for an area that gets occasional use.

More solid paths usually are made from an array of materials such as gravel, wood, brick, and stone. If you are going to be carrying items across it regularly you should consider making it at least two to three feet wide for convenience.

Adding flowers and ornamental plants along the edges of the path can make it a joy to walk on. And placing a small water feature, bird bath, a large grouping of flowers, or another type focal point where the path curves can add a dramatic effect. There are a ton of great garden path ideas to choose from.

Bridges Are Not Only For Water

Bridges too can be a gorgeous transition space. You might need one if your property has a stream running through it or you can use it to connect one side of a fish pond to another.

If you do use one over a pond it will also allow you a bird’s eye view of your pets, a place to sit and relax, and of course, feed your fish. Many wooden bridges can be found for pretty cheap online and can also be used over different mediums other than water, like gravel or river stones for example.

By adding a little to your transition spaces and designing them in an intelligent manner you can really add to the look of your home. Side yards, paths, and bridges all have enormous potential and often cost much less than other projects. So be sure not to leave them out of your next upgrade, you won’t regret it!
